Next race: Thursday 26th June 2008 at
19:15
From: Punstock Road, Darwen. GR689221
The start of the Aggies Staircase race changed as from 2007
because a bit of path which we have been using for many years has been
fenced off and blocked by the landowner. The good news is that the start
is a bit closer to the registration venue at the White Lion, and none of
the climbing has been lost, even though the
route is a bit shorter.
Route Description
3.8 miles with 1150 feet of climb including three climbs of Darwen Moor.
Starting at the top of Punstock Road, the route climbs a path then a
track past Sniddle Hill Farm before crossing steep fields to join the main track up to Darwen Tower.
It then descends through the small quarry towards the top of Bold
Venture Park, climbs steeply up a rough path known as Jacobs Ladder, heads
across the moor and then down to the foot of Aggie's Staircase. This is
the shortest but steepest of the three climbs, and from the top you will
return to the Tower and descend part of the way you first came up, but
continuing on the old route towards Sunnyhurst. At the gate at the
bottom turn right as in previous years, continue past Robin Hood's
cottage until you reach the Sniddle Hill track, where you turn left down
the path to the finish at the top of Punstock Road. Entry is £3.50,
on the day only. The race is to be held under FRA rules, race category
BS. T-shirts free to all finishers again, sponsored by
Sound Reduction Systems.
